"Grace" Wins MECC Mock Election
Early Childhood Center students had a historic vote of their own on Election Day - deciding between Grace or Duck for The Storybook President of MECC!

"MECC celebrated "Voting Day" with a Duck and Grace Initiative. A team of teachers met to create a fun week of ideas for all students and staff to share leading up to voting day, and on Tuesday the students were in action as they voted for their favorite......Duck or Grace!" shared MECC Reading Specialist Lynell Foley.

Students chose to elect either Duck of Duck for President by Doreen Cronin or Grace of Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio. MECC had a Spirit Week Schedule including 'Wear a Hat!' day and 'Dress in Stars or Stripes or Both!' day that then culminated into 'Red, White, and Blue Election Day!'

Students were assigned a voting time, a 15 minute block, where they went to the Kiva or Room 326 to vote. Voting Ballots and 'I Voted!' stickers were provided. Once the class voted, teachers then collected class ballots, tallied them in private, and then added the winner to the poll. On Wednesday, November 9, MECC Principal Melissa Bly announced the winner of the new Storybook President of MECC: Grace! The total election count was a score of 915 for Grace and 814 for Duck. It was a close race indeed!

So what deciding factors did our students use for choosing who received their vote? The following MECC first graders explain:

"I voted for Duck because he quacks," shared Daniel Bian of MECC teacher Cassie Bethel's class.

"I voted for Grace because she is a person and Duck isn't real," said Landin Brewer from Tanya Miller's class.

"I voted for Duck because he helps clean the farm," explained Kayla Marcotte, also in Bethel's class.
