2019 ValStudents, families and friends attending the William Mason High School Class of 2019’s graduation ceremony were treated to a powerful speech by the class Valedictorian Jenny Hong during the school’s commencement ceremony on May 19.

Valedictorian Hong is the daughter of Alan Hong and Dana Jian. She plans to study Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University.

Hong offered classmates the following advice:

"The power is in our hands: will we be ineffectual and stifled by our insecurities, or will we take the courage to embrace ourselves and stride out into the world unabashed? Will we cover our mouths or will we extend those same hands outward, to our families and friends and neighbors, toward positive causes we want to promote, skills we want to build, stories we want to tell, to uplifting each other? Class of 2019, let’s find our voices. We have all struggled with self-doubt, but these things do not matter. What does matter is finding and following our passions. Let’s start by doing small, meaningful things and together we can make an impact on the world."

The class of 2019 also had one Salutatorian: Michael Luo. Luo is the son of William Lo and Angela Cao. He plans to study Computer Science and Economics at New York University this fall.
