Powell Named Mason Elementary School PrincipalNext year, Mason City Schools third and fourth graders will attend the newly formed Mason Elementary School - located on the Mason Intermediate campus. Javaris Powell will lead Mason Elementary School as its first principal.

Mason Elementary School students and staff have the opportunity to build something new, together. Superintendent Jonathan Cooper expressed confidence in Powell’s ability to make strong connections.  “As a former fourth grade teacher who is deeply steeped in Responsive Classroom - an approach that lifts up the whole child and has been used at MECC for over a decade - I am very excited to see our learners’ experiences become even more aligned under Javaris’ leadership,” explains Cooper.

He appreciates Powell’s passion, innovative vision, and gift for listening to and connecting with students, staff and families.

“I asked our staff what they were looking for in their principal, and our 3/4 teachers shared that they wanted a ‘Thoughtfully decisive’ leader. Mr. Powell fits that description perfecting. Since Mr. Powell arrived in Mason, he has been an integral part of our culture, inclusive excellence, and personalized learning work. I am so grateful to have a leader of his calibre at the helm of the new Mason Elementary,” says Cooper.

Currently a Mason Middle School assistant principal, Powell is very familiar with the Mason Elementary location since he has served in the space since January. Mason Elementary School is located in the northern one-story entrance that temporarily houses Mason Middle School this year during its renovation. Powell came to the Mason City School District with a rich mixture of educational experiences that include success as a classroom teacher, administrator, and educational partnership manager.

“I am so honored to serve these students, staff and families. It is exciting to work with a great team in forging a powerful, connected culture of learning that feels small, is joyful and inspiring,” Powell shares.

The district's third and fourth graders attended school at Western Row Elementary this year. Western Row (which was built in 1962) will close in June as part of the district’s Master Facilities PlanClosing Western Row saves approximately $500,000 in operating costs annually, and $14 million in capital investments that would be needed to bring Western Row up to OSFC standards.
