Fort Ancient PresentationMason fourth graders learned all about artifacts from the Mound Builder time period in Ohio when director of Fort Ancient, Jack Blosser, presented to the students on November 6 and 7.

"Blosser was dressed as an 18th century trader in full regalia and told stories and shared objects that people from that time period used," explained MI fourth grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher leader Christine Work.

The Mission of the Dayton Society of Natural History at Fort Ancient is to provide visitor and educational services focused on archaeology, Native American culture, and heritage stewardship as they relate to the site, on behalf of the Ohio History Connection.

"Jack was so incredibly entertaining and engaging. Our 4th graders were given a complete hands-on experience with artifacts from the prehistoric and historic time periods," shared Work. "He explained how early people in Ohio had to be innovative and resourceful in order to survive.

"I was intrigued with how they used their animals as resources and didn't waste a thing!" said WR fourth grader Katie Samol.

Students saw a rattle made of deer toenails and a shovel/scraper made from a deer's shoulder blade. Blosser further explained how these native people traded and had to learn how to compromise with the European settlers who began living on their land.

"Students were able to listen to Jack play a flute, as well as touch or try on some of the artifacts he brought with him," added Work. "About a third of what he brought were primary sources and not replicas, which also impressed us! He dressed as a 19th century tradesman which added to the experience and enjoyment of teachers and students alike."

Fort Ancient is one of 58 historic sites and museums of the Ohio History Connection, a nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, natural history and archaeology.
