Mason Sixth Graders Brighten the Holiday Season for Local Elderly

Team VentureMason Intermediate sixth graders on Team Venture participated in a service project that prepared hearts and minds for the holiday season. Twenty-two students, parents, and teachers visited the Mason Health Care Center after school on December 21. Students helped elderly residents at the center create crafts, while also spontaneously singing Christmas Carols with the residents as they worked.

The Mason Health Care Center is a 43 bed Skilled Nursing Care facility in Mason, with ten Residential Care units (Assisted Living). The Center offers routine nursing care, medically related social services, a diverse activity program, restorative/rehabilitative nursing care and therapeutic diets.

“For many of our students, working one on one with an elderly resident was a step outside of their comfort zone. “ said Team Venture teacher Tina Orlando.  “I was touched by how brave and compassionate our kids were throughout our entire visit.”

Students agreed that participating in this service project was worthwhile, even though it meant giving up free time after school.

“Everybody there seemed really happy,” commented sixth grader Jill Terribilini. “Overall, it was a really fun experience.”

This marks the eleventh year for Team Venture’s community service program. Team Venture teachers created the group “Venture Out!” to provide students with service opportunities, at least once a month throughout the year.
