Being an effective Board of Education member is no easy task, particularly in today’s climate of change and challenge. The Mason City Schools Board of Education has worked to stay ahead of Mason’s growth, and has managed to do so both cost effectively and with stellar academic results.
Enrollment has increased by nearly 580 students each year for the last 12 years. Yet, with great planning, we have not had any modular or portable classroom units.
Mason spends $112 less per pupil than the average of what other Ohio schools spend.
Mason scored an “Excellent” rating on all eight administrations of the state report card.
The School Board always welcomes the public to attend board meetings, and there is a special time set aside at each meeting to ask questions or share good news. Community members are encouraged to speak to the Board during the “Hearing of the Public” section of the meeting. All you need to do is sign the attendance sheet, fill out and return a "Request to Speak" form and state your name before speaking.
If you would like your comments recorded in the minutes, simply submit a written copy of your comments. Those requesting to be heard may have their name placed on the agenda if they contact the Office of the Superintendent one week before the scheduled meeting.
The school board generally meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. Meetings are at 7 p.m. in the Mason High School’s Harvard Room, 6100 S. Mason-Montgomery Road. The Board’s job is to adopt policies, schedules and other resolutions affecting school operations.
The Board employs the superintendent as the administrative head and educational leader of the schools, staff and students.
The board employs the treasurer as the chief financial officer to oversee the fiscal operation of the school district, develop the budget and prepare an annual appropriations measure.
Additionally, the board adopts school policies and calendars and approves contracts, business items and approves placing tax levy requests on the ballot.
While all meetings are open to the public, the board may call an executive session, or closed-door session, during a meeting to discuss personnel, property purchases, pending legal action, employee negotiations and security. These meetings are for discussion only, and the board will reconvene to a public session to vote on an issue, if needed, or adjourn the meeting. The Board may call special meetings if the need arises, with adequate notice given to each member, as well as the press. Adequate notice is generally at a minimum of 24 hours.
