The Mason City Schools Health Services staff is committed to meeting the daily health care needs of students as well as the educational and long term care needs associated with chronic illness in children. It is our goal to be a resource to parents and a partner to health care providers in our community. We function as advocates for students in the educational setting, focusing attention on students’ physical health and wellness, as well as their mental, social and emotional well-being.

The Mason City Schools Health Services staff welcomes you and your family to our district. As health care providers in the school setting, we welcome information regarding your child’s health and/or health needs. Please contact us and let us know how we can help your child transition to the Mason area with as little interruption to their health care as possible. Health-related forms are available on the district website, and we are glad to answer any questions you may have. Each Mason school building houses a Health Services office staffed by nurses employed as School Health Service Coordinators:

The Mason City Schools Health Services Coordinator:
  • Maintains the health clinic and health records
  • Completes vision screenings and referrals for Grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and new students, according to the Ohio Department of Health guidelines
  • Completes hearing screenings and referrals for Grades K, 1, 3, 5, 9 and new students according to the Ohio Department of Health guidelines
  • Completes scoliosis screenings and referrals for Grade 7 according to district policy
  • Monitors immunization compliance and communicates the legal requirements to parents/guardians, referring them to community resources where immunizations can be obtained, if necessary
  • Serves as a consultant to building staff on managing individual student health concerns and diagnoses in the school setting
  • Develops and monitors emergency plans for critical student health problems
  • Administers medications: oral, inhaled, rectal, topical and injectable, as prescribed by a physician and as set forth by district policy
  • Performs nursing skills as required by physician orders and district policy
  • Assesses students, administers appropriate first aid and makes referrals to appropriate community resources, including physician offices, emergency departments, counseling resources, and health departments
  • Contacts parents/guardians of ill or injured students to confirm parents’ arrangements for students to leave school
