Bus Rider Safety

DESIGNATED PLACE OF SAFETY
Ohio State law requires all bus drivers to assign each student a Designated Place of Safety (DPS) a place where students are to stand to wait for the bus to arrive in the AM so that the driver may see them as the bus approaches the stop and this is the same place they must stand in the PM to wait for the bus to depart the area.  We tell students not to move until they can see the back of the bus.

The purpose of the DPS is to reduce the potential of a student being struck by the bus or another motorist during the loading and unloading process.  Drivers count the students in the Designated Place of Safety before they board the bus and again once they get on the bus. In the PM, students are to go the Designated Place of Safety where they can be counted by the driver and are to remain in the Designated Place of Safety until the bus pulls away from the bus stop.

The safety of our students is paramount to every driver and administrator. Making sure that students observe and obey the use of the DPS aids our drivers in picking up and dropping off our students safely every day.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s place of safety, please feel free to contact the Transportation Director.

Danger Zone

The “Danger Zone” is an area 10 feet on all sides of the bus.  Students are taught to stay out of the “Danger Zone”

If students must cross the street to get on or off the bus, students must wait for the driver’s hand signal and cross 10 feet in front of the bus.  Students should always check traffic for themselves before crossing the street as well.  Students are never to cross behind the bus.  Students should wait in their Designated Place of Safety, away from  traffic until signaled by the driver to board the bus.

Students should always be in a location where they can see the driver.  If they can see the driver, the driver will be able to see them.

If a student should drop something, NEVER go near the bus to retrieve it.  Tell the driver or other adult in the area and wait until you get a signal that it is safe to pick up your belongings.
