MHS Bathroom Wall Threat
On March 15, several students reported seeing a threatening message that was on a boys bathroom wall at Mason High School. The message read, “Parkland 2.0 on 4/20/2018.” As part of the Mason Police Department and MHS administration’s investigation that included interviewing students and reviewing video footage, we have not learned any information that leads us to believe that this is a credible threat. However, we continue to follow up on leads to determine the person responsible for posting the graffiti threat.

Acting with the utmost of caution, we will have significantly increased police presence and involvement on April 20 to ensure that students and staff are safe. We deeply appreciate City Council’s investment in its Campus Security Team. City and MCS leaders are continuing to further enhance the campus security concept, and we are investing in increasing the police presence at all of our schools on a regular basis.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you have any information on this incident, or any safety concern, please report it to authorities or use our SafeSchools Tipline.

MMS Schoology Threat
Last evening, we received a SafeSchools tip that a Mason Middle School student posted a threatening message containing a great deal of vulgarity on Schoology. Our MMS Administrative team immediately notified law enforcement and began investigating. The Mason City Schools administration, along with the Mason Police department, determined that the person who posted the Schoology message was impersonating a classmate, and that there was no credible threat to school or student safety. A student who impersonates someone in order to try to get them into trouble is violating school rules and the law, and faces school disciplinary action and legal ramifications. It is also a crime to induce panic by making a threat to school safety. A student who induces panic faces school disciplinary action and legal ramifications.

Please continue having conversations with your child about your family’s expectations and values.
