MCS Increases Sub Pay

The Mason City Schools Board of Education board voted to increase pay for substitute teachers starting next month.
Beginning February 4, 2019, Mason City Schools substitute teachers will see an increase in pay from $80 per day to $85 per day.
In addition, long-term subs will also see an increase in daily pay. Substitutes who have the same assignment for 21-60 consecutive days will receive $100 a day. Substitutes who have the same assignment for more than 60 consecutive days are paid the same level as a Mason teacher with a Bachelor’s degree and no experience.
“In a tight job market, it has been especially hard to attract and keep high quality substitutes - and that’s been an issue not just in Mason, but across the region,” explains Tonya McCall, Chief Talent Officer. “We also heard from many of our wonderful subs that the pay rate just hasn’t kept up, and wanted to respond to that. Additionally, our teachers don’t like being out of the classroom, but when an emergency comes up they want to make sure we are bringing in high quality staff for them, and we’re hopeful that increasing the rate will help us attract more subs who look forward to being part of our Mason family.”
