Gifted Service: Academic and Creative Talented (ACT)
Students will work with a specialist two times per week in a resource
room. Differentiated instruction is provided in the regular classroom.
the gifted resource room class meetings, the emphasis is on enriching,
extending, and building upon the Mason’s learning standards and
information processing skills, specifically the ability to gather, organize, analyze, and apply information
problem solving skills, specifically the ability to identify, define, analyze, develop and assess possible problem solutions
thinking skills, specifically the ability to use critical/reflective
thinking focused on deciding what to do or believe. This includes
supporting ideas with facts and/or logic and explaining relationships
skills, specifically the ability to plan, create, and present verbal,
visual, and written information in order to effectively share thoughts
and ideas with others
self-discipline and responsibility.
Specifically, at grade 1, Students
will be introduced to other countries and cultures through read aloud
texts, research, inquiry based lessons and media. will develop an
understanding of how societies have changed as well as how societies
around the world are different, and will be introduced to/develop an
understanding of the research process using the 7 Step IIM. Students
will work collaboratively to apply research skills through a (modified) 7
How to Qualify
Earn a qualifying score on a state-approved cognitive test on one of the two opportunities provided by parent request only during the kindergarten year.
We offer two testing opportunities each year – January and March. All grade one students take the CogAT in
January and a second opportunity is offered to those who did not
qualify in March when we offer the OLSAT.
If you are new to
the district you must provide results showing a qualifying score on a
state-approved cognitive test that was administered within the past 24
months, or the district will administer a cognitive test to your child
within 90 days of the request. New students registering in the summer
need to request gifted services and you will be provided dates for
