Eagle Scout Builds Playground Additions at MI

Mason Intermediate School students are gaga over their additional Gaga Pit - thanks to a service-minded MHS student who knows the importance of having opportunities to play hard. Mason High School senior Spencer Gerdes chose to help improve Mason Intemediate's playground as a Life Scout with Troop 500.

"The Eagle Scout Project was construction of a new Gaga Pit designed to be portable, and a new 9-Square arena to encourage team building, living well, being healthy, and allowing more students to play the more popular games," shared Gerdes.

Adding another Gaga Pit and 9-Square game allows many more students to be active and play during recess. Gaga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit. The more players the better! The game is played with a soft foam ball, and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to hit opponents with a ball below the knees. Players need to keep moving to avoid getting hit by the ball.

"The students love to have fun and those are the two most popular games at recess," explained MI Principal Eric Messer. "The more we have for students to do, the less we have problems with discipline as well."

Fifth grade math teacher on Team Inspire Maddy Rosetti is the 'unofficial' connection between the Scouts and projects at MI.

"The kids are playing and loving these additions to the MI play area for recess," shared Rosetti. "MI is always in need of more equipment for kids at recess and he helped fill that need! He did an amazing job!"
