On December 19, Mason Intermediate School held its annual National Geographic Geography Bee sponsored by Google. The elementary school’s social studies teachers held their own preliminary and qualifying rounds earlier in the year. Out of the school’s over 2,500 fourth, fifth and sixth graders, 96 students participated in the school-wide bee representing their classes. After many intense rounds, two contestants were narrowed down to two championship finalists: fourth grader Varun Sathyajeeth and sixth grader Sanjay Swamy. After a long and intense final round, Sanjay Swamy from team Quest won!
As the 2015-2016 Mason Intermediate School Geography Bee winner, Swamy will complete a written assessment to determine if he qualifies for the state competition on April 1.
“We wish Sanjay the best in his preparation, and are proud to have him represent Mason Intermediate!“ said Valerie Spaeth, sixth grade social studies teacher and geography bee coordinator.
