Warning to Parents about "The Momo Challenge"Dear Mason City Schools Family,

You may have seen a warning on Facebook or in the news about “The Momo Challenge”  - which allegedly involves disturbing images popping up in videos, video games or messaging apps that urge young children to harm others or themselves.

While this may be a viral internet hoax, some Mason City Schools staff have reported that some students have voiced concerns about the challenge, and we wanted to make you aware so that you can talk with your child or teen.

We love Common Sense Media, and appreciate their suggestions about parenting today. They remind us that internet safety is about more than just blocking harmful content from our children or teens’ devices. Instead, they encourage families to continually talk to children about following your rules on how to use the internet, how to recognize “red flags” in conversations or content, and to immediately tell an adult if something mean or creepy happens. Here are some of their recommendations for dealing with internet stunts like the Momo Challenge that can be frightening for kids.

We appreciate your partnership!

Sincerely,

Tracey Carson
